AGM

Don’t forget that the AGM is on the 22nd August 2019 so this is nearly your last opportunity to nominate for a position on the committee for 2019–2010 year.  Don’t wait to be asked; you can nominate yourself - just fill in the nomination form and ask two other members to sign it for you. Don’t be shy, your club needs you.

How to Kill A Branch

The following is a guide on how to kill a club:

  • Decline all offices and committee appointments: You're too busy - Then offer vociferous advice on how to do things.
  • Don't work: It's not your concern - Then complain because the Branch has stagnated or facilities are not ready.
  • Don't get involved: That's for the committee - Then complain about the lack of organisation.
  • Don't initiate new ideas: That requires thinking - Then play devil's advocate to those submitted by others.
  • Don't participate beyond your dues: They are too high anyway - Then complain about poor financial management.
  • Don't encourage others to become members: That's selling - Then complain about membership not growing.
  • Don't read news letters or notices: They are not important - Then complain you're never kept informed.
  • Don't volunteer your talents: That's ego fulfilling - Then complain you're never asked and never appreciated.

You may have read this & had a little laugh, but look at it in a serious light & it drives home the need for the whole membership of the branch to become involved to ensure its success, or simply its survival.

Birthday Lunch

Our 57th Birthday Lunch was a great success. Forty five members sat down to a splendid meal at Kembla Grange Golf Club –afterwards many members said how much they enjoyed themselves. Our lunch organiser deserves our congratulations, Jackie does a wonderful job.

See you at the next meeting…

Christmas Concert Success

26th November 2018

The Dapto Seniors’ Concert Group held their popular Christmas Concert at the end of November to an audience that packed Heininger Hall.

Dapto Seniors Christmas Concert

Everybody enjoyed the concert immensely - one of the sketches nearly brought the house down.

Dapto Seniors Christmas Concert

The choir was on song:

Afterwards there was the usual snack and Lucky Door prize draw.

CPSA Annual Conference 2018

The Dapto Team

Dapto Seniors Delegates

The afternoon before the conference the Dapto delegates and observers took the train to Sydney to book in at our accommodation. Afterwards we assembled at the nearby Great Southern Hotel for light refreshments and, for some, an evening meal.

During the evening we were joined by the members of the ABC Classic FM staff from all over the state in town for fun and frolics (one of whom kindly took this photo).

The CPSA Conference

On the following morning our delegates arrived at the conference venue bright eyed and bushy tailed to sign in at 8.30am.

Early on the first day they were very proud to witness a member of Dapto Seniors being presented with a well deserved Association Life Membership. The presentation was made by Dr Michael Wynne, a guest speaker.

Presentation of Association Life MembershipPresentation of Association Life Membership

The conference takes place over two days and frankly is shambolic,  it was very hard to hear or understand the Chairperson (our table was near the back as usual) and the proceedings certainly made our club meetings look very slick and well managed. However we muddled through and it has to be said the provided food was fine.

181031 002 CPSA Annual Conference

Our President once again gave his Bush Telegraph report about the activities at Dapto Branch of the CPSA including information about our craft group making laundry bags for the Defence Force  (Hero Quilts and Laundry Bags), he also mentioned our many weekly activities, this web site, our history and our brochure. He also gave a report on the activities of the South Coast Area Council.

The Guest Speakers

This year all the guest speakers were very good though, at times, it was hard to hear what they were saying or see the slides on the screen. Head Office is going to send out copies of the slides in the near future.

“Is Aged Care a failed system and what can we do about it?”
Presented by Dr Michael Wynne from Aged Care Crisis

“Why are energy prices so high?”
Presented by Thea Bray; Project Officer for Energy and Water within the Public Interest Advocacy Centre.

“Financial rights and vulnerabilities”
Presented by Diana Bernard from Seniors Rights Service

Report

At our next branch meeting on 15th November our President will make a full report about the conference and the ‘goings on’.

Members will be able to ask questions. The committee is sure that members will find this speaker very interesting and informative having heard her speak at the CPSA Annual Conference last year. Make sure you attend and have your questions ready.

The meeting usually finishes between 11 and 11.30am.

New members are most welcome to come along and find out about the club, there is a short newsletter available for new or potential members at the raffle/signing in table which details coming events and contact details for the various group leaders. Please take one.

Just a reminder - Our AGM will be held on the 9th August 2018 before our usual meeting. Nomination forms are available at the signing in table. Consider volunteering to help your club prosper.

Bus Trips

The next bus trip is to Cobbitty and Warragamba. An old favourite – stock up with quality wine at ridiculously low prices, then marvel at the views and enjoy the exhibition at Warragamba Dam visitor centre before taking lunch at the wonderful Campbelltown Catholic Club (unfortunately lunch is not included in the ticket price).

Tickets will be on sale at this meeting for a mere $12. Get in early to enjoy the trip.

HARS Museum

Our last bus trip to the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society was enjoyed by all who attended.

This is just a small selection of the aircraft that members saw and entered on their guided tour. The tour guide was very good, telling the party just enough to maintain their interest and answering many questions - it was a great visit and we highly recommend it to other groups.

Christmas and a Happy New Year

What a year we have had!

Bus trips, lunches, picnics, social days out and all the wonderful things that make Dapto Seniors the fun club it  is. We look forward to seeing you all next year on the 14th January 2016 when we can start to do it all again.

Bus Trips

Our last trip for 2015 was a cruise on Port Hacking. After a worrying start when the council supplied us with the wrong bus it all turned out very well and members had a lovely day exploring the river aboard a fantastic old ferry Tom Thumb III, it was a day spent in glorious sunshine.

Afterwards the group retired to Cronulla RSL for lunch, a chat and the chance to admire the views of Cronulla Beach and the Pacific Ocean.

The bus trips are held every month and visit a wide variety of places of interest. This year members went on visits to Wivenhoe House, the Careflight Helicopter base, the fascinating Egyptian Room, the Norman Lindsay Gallery and many more terrific places. The cost is usually $12 plus the cost of entry if any (and usually we get a group discount) so these trips are within anyone’s means, where ever possible we get a guided tour of the establishment we visit. As well as being interesting the trip is a social occasion with stops for morning tea and a lunch so there is plenty of time to sit and chat with your fellow members.

Our thanks to all the volunteer drivers who make the day so enjoyable.

Concerts

The Concert Group performed three concerts during the year. All of them were well received; the Christmas concert provided an exciting seasonal finale to the year.

There was some wonderful singing by the choir interspersed with comedy and solo acts of an amazingly high standard. The audience cheered and cheered and when it was their turn to join in with the singalong they did so with great enthusiasm. The light snack afterwards and the many door prizes made the event one to remember and ensured everyone present looked forward to the next.

The group is always on the look out for new talent so you are most welcome to join, fun is always high on the agenda - don’t be shy, come along and take part; rehearsals are every Monday afternoon (once the club’s year starts).

Activities

Apart from these activities Dapto Seniors has something going on every day of the week, Whether it is carpet bowls, cards, exercises, computer tuition, theatre visits or craft there is something that will suit you (click on the CLUB ACTIVITIES tab at the top of the page to find out more). We also take part in various publicity events arranged by local community groups and/or  Wollongong Council.

Just around the corner - 2016

Wow! another year is almost here; where does the time go?
