Farewell 2018!

2018 has ended as far as the activities of Dapto Seniors are concerned but we will be back in 2019 with all our regular activities.

Christmas Lunch

The final event of the year was the club’s Christmas Lunch held at Dapto Leagues Club where the staff always look after us very well.

The food was among the best of the year with duck, beef wellington, Christmas pudding and trifle on the menu. Between courses the draw for the beautiful quilt and the blanket made by the craft group was held. Thank you to everyone that took part.

After the food there was a lot of chatting as well as the lucky door prize draw – every attendee went home with a prize.

The Dapto Seniors’ Concert Group held their popular Christmas Concert at the end of November to an audience that packed Heininger Hall.

Everybody enjoyed the concert immensely - one of the sketches nearly brought the house down.

The choir was on song:

CPSA Annual Conference 2018

The Dapto Team

Dapto Seniors Delegates

The afternoon before the conference the Dapto delegates and observers took the train to Sydney to book in at our accommodation. Afterwards we assembled at the nearby Great Southern Hotel for light refreshments and, for some, an evening meal.

During the evening we were joined by the members of the ABC Classic FM staff from all over the state in town for fun and frolics (one of whom kindly took this photo).

The CPSA Conference

On the following morning our delegates arrived at the conference venue bright eyed and bushy tailed to sign in at 8.30am.

Early on the first day they were very proud to witness a member of Dapto Seniors being presented with a well deserved Association Life Membership. The presentation was made by Dr Michael Wynne, a guest speaker.

Presentation of Association Life MembershipPresentation of Association Life Membership

The conference takes place over two days and frankly is shambolic,  it was very hard to hear or understand the Chairperson (our table was near the back as usual) and the proceedings certainly made our club meetings look very slick and well managed. However we muddled through and it has to be said the provided food was fine.

181031 002 CPSA Annual Conference

Our President once again gave his Bush Telegraph report about the activities at Dapto Branch of the CPSA including information about our craft group making laundry bags for the Defence Force  (Hero Quilts and Laundry Bags), he also mentioned our many weekly activities, this web site, our history and our brochure. He also gave a report on the activities of the South Coast Area Council.

The Guest Speakers

This year all the guest speakers were very good though, at times, it was hard to hear what they were saying or see the slides on the screen. Head Office is going to send out copies of the slides in the near future.

“Is Aged Care a failed system and what can we do about it?”
Presented by Dr Michael Wynne from Aged Care Crisis

“Why are energy prices so high?”
Presented by Thea Bray; Project Officer for Energy and Water within the Public Interest Advocacy Centre.

“Financial rights and vulnerabilities”
Presented by Diana Bernard from Seniors Rights Service

Report

At our next branch meeting on 15th November our President will make a full report about the conference and the ‘goings on’.

Sunday, 28 October 2018

2018 CPSA Annual Conference

Delegates from Dapto Seniors and our local South Area Council will be attending the CPSA Annual Conference being held at Rydges Hotel in  Sydney near Central Station. It takes place over two days on the 30th and 31st October 2018.

There will be a full report at our next meeting.

Speakers Arranged

After the fascinating talk by the representative from Remondis members will be pleased to know that we have a couple of speakers lined up to talk to us at future meetings.

Nurses Federation.

In July we are getting visit from the Nurses Federation Rep who will talk to us about Nursing Homes and some of the important questions we should be asking before entering a nursing or residential home.

End of Life Preparations.

In August a representative from Legal Aid will be speaking to us about end of life considerations, which might involve the death of a spouse or making a will. Not a topic we talk about much but something we all have to face.

These speakers will be attending meetings in July and August - more details will be given nearer the time.

End of Financial Year.

Here we are nearing the end of the financial year and time to start preparing for next year, our AGM and a new committee. Please think of putting your name forward for one of the many jobs that keep your club running smoothly. The AGM date will be announced later.

Licence Agreement.

A new licence agreement with Wollongong City Council has been agreed and will be sent to Head Office for signing. The new agreement is for a period of ten years rather than the five years of previous agreements.

Social Day Out

12th April 2018

It was mid morning as members made their way to Integral Energy Park and the Motorlife Museum’s Brabham Room for the club’s annual Social Day Out.

Maureen had organised her probing trivia quiz so there was plenty of chat and happy banter as the group tucked into the lovely cakes and slices for morning tea while they puzzled over the questions.

180412 006 Seniors Social Day Out Integral Energy Park

The chicken lunch arrived on cue at midday which cut the buzz of conversation to a minimum but once the food had been devoured the laughter and conversation started up again.

The temperature outside was 35°C; far too hot for the outdoor games that had been planned so members stayed in the air conditioned comfort and enjoyed each others company.

The President thanked our organiser for arranging such a splendid outing and members are already looking forward to the next one.

Concert

It is time for the Concert Group to entertain you once again.

Our Mothers’ Day Concert is rather early this year because of the council’s refurbishment of the kitchen in Heininger Hall. The group didn’t want to disappoint their audience by not supplying them with tea, coffee and a snack so there was no alternative but to bring the event forward to the 24th April. Don’t worry the entertainment will still be of its usual high standard.

Just remember:

Venue: Heininger Hall, Ribbonwood Centre, Dapto
Time: 1.30pm (but get there early to get the best seats)

See you there...

Social Day Out

Last Thursday saw the club take its annual Social Day Out; as usual, the venue for this activity was the Motorlife Museum in Integral Energy Park just outside Dapto.

Oh! what fun was had by all who attended; there was cake, a chicken lunch, competitions, games, lucky door prizes and finally ice cream. It was so much fun.

170413 005 Seniors Social Day Out Picnic

Before the meal everybody chose from a wonderful selection of delicious cakes while they enjoyed a cup of tea or coffee (some even had beer) and took part in the trivia quiz, it was a testing competition this year.

170413 011 Seniors Social Day Out Picnic

A highlight of the day was the Easter bonnet parade when our most creative members cavorted for the amusement of the rest. The competition was won by Russell in his illuminated miner’s helmet but it was really hard to pick between all the entries.

After lunch the group went outside for games. There was Bocce, Quoits and Throwing the Rolling Pin - Philomena was outstanding at quoits being the only one to actually score! All our winners went home with a lovely prize for their efforts. Finally there was a lucky door prize draw followed by ice cream before everybody reluctantly went home.

As always Maureen and Rudy organised a fantastic event and deserved the thanks they received from members who went home well satisfied after a terrific day out in great company.

Why not join us to take part in our many social occasions?

Dapto Seniors and Heininger Hall

Dapto Seniors’ first home was donated by Dapto Bowling Club at least forty years ago and served its purpose until the club outgrew it. It was situated on the eastern edge of what is now the Heininger House car park.

Members lobbied Council to build a new Senior Citizens Centre which resulted in Heininger House being built for Dapto Seniors and occupied in 1985. From 1985 to 2001 the seniors club managed the premises letting various rooms for community groups and people from all walks of life. It was run by a management committee comprised of a majority from Dapto Seniors and a minority representing other local community organisations.

The hall was only officially opened in 1988 even though the club had been running it for three years.

The management committee ran the premises at a profit and, as will be seen later, were able to hand over a considerable sum of money to the Council in 2001.

In 2000 the committee was approached by Council and asked if they would like to continue running the premises after the construction of the Ribbonwood Centre was completed. At this time the construction of the Ribbonwood Centre was completely divorced from Heininger House. The management committee was unaware that the new buildings were actually going to abut the hall.

Negotiations for a Council takeover commenced early 2000 and from the outset the council promised Dapto Seniors free use of the hall and all its facilities in perpetuity if management was taken over by the Council. Unfortunately a promise from the council representative that any set up would be carried out by Council free of charge was never written down. The minutes of March 1st 2001 and April 12th 2001 (Dapto seniors meetings) record a letter sent by council confirming this free use of the hall and all its facilities.

Upon the handover on 1st July 2001 Council employees collected all documentation including the above mentioned letter as well as $48819.00 which had been accumulated by the management committee.

NB: This information was compiled from minutes and other records of Dapto Seniors as well as the recollection of a lady who was club secretary for 17 years and a member of the management committee during the transfer to Wollongong City Council.

Christmas Concert

Our Christmas Concert was a great success with nearly 150 people enjoying a fun filled concert. We had people from as far away as Penrith attending. Cheers of “encore” echoed through the hall. Afterwards there was a snack, tea or coffee and the gigantic door prize draw.

During the show a star was born.

The Christmas Lunch

As usual members enjoyed a fantastic Christmas lunch in the Sinclair Room at Dapto Leagues Club. The main course offered a choice of Barramundi or Pork with Pavlova or Trifle for desert. No-one complained!

At the lunch a past President, Vice President and long time member was presented with a Branch Life membership for the years of work she had put into the club, an award she very much deserved.
